Your liver works quietly around the clock, yet most people rarely think about it until a health problem develops. Located mainly beneath the ribs on the upper-right side of the abdomen, the liver is the body’s largest internal organ. It performs hundreds of tasks connected to digestion, metabolism, immunity, blood composition and waste removal. In simple terms, the liver acts like a chemical laboratory, storage center, quality-control station and security system combined. 

Every time you eat, drink or take medicine, your liver becomes involved. Nutrient-rich blood from the digestive system travels to the liver, where liver cells inspect, transform, store or release the substances it contains. 1. The Liver Processes Harmful Substances

Some processed substances travel through the blood to the kidneys and leave in urine. Others are added to bile and eventually pass through the intestines. The liver also converts ammonia, a harmful waste product created during protein metabolism, into urea, which can be removed by the kidneys.
